I celebrated my birthday at Disneyland!
I took my little brother to the
Disney theme parks to celebrate many of his birthdays.
Wearing his Disney birthday button, he was wished a happy
birthday by multiple Cast Members. Occasionally, he received
a birthday surprise. At Disneyland’s Blue Bayou
restaurant, he got a birthday cupcake and was serenaded with
a special Blue Bayou birthday song. At Disney’s Animal Kingdom, he was
given a special Fastpass (which he used to bypass the wait
for Expedition Everest) and a delicious slice of chocolate
cake at a counter service restaurant. When we
were staying at a Walt Disney World hotel on his birthday,
he got a bouquet of balloons and a photo of his favorite
Disney character. It was always a blast celebrating my brother's birthday at one of the Disney parks. I thought it might be fun to spend my own birthday at Disneyland in California. When I told one of my friends about my birthday wish, he said, “Let’s do it!” And so, even though I am a full-fledged adult, on my birthday in 2007, my friend and I headed to Disneyland Resort. We arrived at Disneyland by monorail and headed toward Town Hall on Main Street to get my birthday button. Along the way, I spotted a Cast Member with a large bag. “Do you know the closest place to get a birthday button?” I asked her. “Right here!” she said. She reached into her bag, pulled out a button and a blue Sharpie, and asked, “What’s their name?” “It’s me… Jen,” I said sheepishly. “Happy Birthday!” she said and handed over my button. I put on the button and my friend and I got in line for the brand-new Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage. The ride had officially opened only one day before (on June 11, 2007). My very patient friend and I waited on the two-hour-long opening-week line to ride the ride. While we were waiting, we entertained ourselves by memorizing the names emblazoned on each of the submarines (Argonaut, Explorer, Mariner, Nautilus, Neptune, Scout, Seafarer, and Voyager). Every one of them was operating that day! During our time in line, we also got to see a special Finding Nemo monorail that was dressed up to look like a submarine in honor of the opening of the attraction. After a fun submarine voyage, we rode my favorite Disneyland rides. We also took a raft to Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island. That day, Jack Sparrow, from Pirates of the Caribbean, was on the island. I posed for a photo with him. When he saw my birthday button he said, in typical Jack Sparrow style, “Oh, it’s birthday day, is it?" Throughout the day, Cast Members enthusiastically wished me, “Happy Birthday, Jen!” I had never been wished happy birthday so many times in one day. Sometimes, the happy birthday wish came when I least expected it. The most unexpected moment was when my friend and I slipped over for a quick visit to California Adventure and stopped to watch the parade. One of the performers in the parade saw my button, pointed at me, and exclaimed, “It’s Jen’s birthday! Happy Birthday, Jen!” Then, he and his fellow performers all waved to me. I have been to Disneyland Resort many times, but, from the happy birthday wishes to the fact that I was at the Disney parks on my birthday, that day was extra magical. |
I did this in 2007 in Anaheim, California, USA. |
