Tips for celebrating a birthday (or any special occasion) at a Disney theme park!

The birthday button that I got when I celebrated my birthday at Disneyland Posing with Jack Sparrow (who looked amazingly like Johnny Depp) on my birthday at Disneyland

Over many birthday and other special occasion visits to Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, I've discovered some tips on how to make the visit extra magical:

1. Have the guest of honor wear a Disney birthday button. The buttons are available for free at guest services inside the parks (eg. Town Hall at Disneyland). The buttons might also be available at your Disney hotel or the park ticket booth. There may be other locations where you can get a button, ask a Cast Member where to find them, especially if there is a long line at guest services. Wearing the button will result in lots of happy birthday wishes, and, occasionally, unexpected surprises. Buttons are also available for honeymoons, anniversaries, family reunions, and first-time guests.

2. If you are getting a birthday button for one of your children and another child would enjoy wearing a button too, ask the Cast Member if they have an "I'm celebrating" button for the other child. Note that these buttons do not usually lead to any special attention or surprises.

3. If you are staying at a Disney hotel, when you make your reservation, and when you check in, let them know that you are celebrating a birthday. They might ask which Disney character the birthday person likes the most. On the day of their birthday, the birthday person might find a card or small gift in their hotel room.

4. Make a reservation at a sit-down restaurant at the park or the Disney resort. Let the reservation agent and your server know that you are celebrating a birthday. Sometimes, the server will bring a special dessert for the birthday person.

5. Take a nice photo of the birthday person with their birthday button.

6. Use your imagination and create your own magical moments. For example, wrap up Disney guidebooks or movies related to the attractions at the park, and give them to the birthday person when you tell them that they will be spending their birthday at a Disney park. On their birthday, surprise them with small gifts throughout the day (eg. when they wake up, while waiting in a line, and when they return to their hotel room after a full day of fun at the park).

I hope you have a magical time celebrating your special occasion at the Disney theme parks!
